Grammatical significance of Chinese topics and their degrees of grammaticalisation

A comparative examination on a considerable amount of linguistic data shows that authentic utterances and written sentences differ greatly in the use of topic markers. In this section, we will first demonstrate the overall differences between these two types of sentences and then focus on those differences with regard to the use of topic markers.
