ABSTRACT

The capitalist ideology is heavily dependent on the narcissistic energies of each separate individual, generated by the eternal issues of shame, control and approval. The capitalist system cannot afford to deal with individuals in possession of stable identities; deep down, it does not support the idea of 'the civilised trickster' who is confident and does not want to have more than he already has. The metropolitan dweller, the one whose trickster is forced under the surface of the bland, sterile, controlled, polite society, is predominantly middle class. In order to 'forget' about the existence of the trickster, which keeps rocking the precarious middle position, one needs to hide it below the surface of the social mask. As far as economic structures are concerned, the line between the innovative-ness of the trickster energy and its narcissistic, degraded counterpart is often invisible.
