ABSTRACT

To highlight the relationship between personal-political imaginations and the ontological complexity of gender security, and why this matters, this chapter connects feminist security theory to practices of gender security. The first part of this chapter unpacks feminist and gendered approaches to security in the context of the broader field of security studies. This investigation of the academic field defined as feminist security studies outlines the various ontological logics underpinning different interpretations of gender security. The second part of this chapter explores some of the ramifications of these ontological logics for the practice of gender security. In the third part of this chapter, turn to a discussion of what it means to understand security as a discourse which people perform and signify. In essence, this chapter argues that gender security is a discourse performed and signified in a multiplicity of ways in response to the social and political context that informs our personal-political imaginations.
