ABSTRACT

We now move from ME to EModE – the Early Modern English period, and this will take us up to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Chapters 13 to 18 deal with the English Renaissance, and there is a nal chapter about the seventeenth century. This rst EModE chapter focuses on the Tudor period, a particularly interesting time historically. After some general history, section 13.2 looks at the language situation of the time. The invention of printing was a major event, and it coincided with a growth of learning and a concerted effort to elevate English into a position where it could take over some of the roles traditionally associated with Latin. There is a section too (13.3) on the growing linguistic consciousness of the age, and the huge fascination that developed towards words and their effects.
