ABSTRACT

The focus of investigation will be on two works that were both created in Paris. The desolate economic situation of the country during the eighteenth century provided a favorable background for a shift from investment to consumption, and Paris was the place to display the goods acquired. Later in the century, the lessons from British politeness were learned. During the nineteenth century, Paris became the place for the highest quality game in many of the creative industries, from fine arts to fashion, and from food to architecture. The city held this leading position until the First World War—after that cataclysmic event, less European-centered game constellations emerged.
