ABSTRACT
This chapter examines Futabatei's revised translations of Turgenev's Svidanie The Rendezvous and Tri vstrechi Three Encounters focusing particularly on the two translations of Three Encounters: Meguriai A Chance Encounter and the later version Kigu. Kimura Shoichi suggests that Futabatei's translation style developed remarkably while working on the second versions of The Rendezvou. And Three Encounter and while translating Asy. And Rudin. He considers that Futabatei's translation style was established by the time these translations were completed, and that it did not essentially change further during the third and final period of his translation activity. People may conclude that even in the second version Futabatei can be said to have adopted a foreignizing strategy, where the tension between the Russian original and the Japanese language led to the creation of a new narrative style. The chapter presents a comparison of Futabatei's translations of past imperfective and perfective verbs.
