ABSTRACT

Homer caws like a crow, to the splendour of Odysseus’ conversations, from fiery Achilles to gentle, sweet-talking Nestor meant that Homer could not be without variation in his style and had to descend from its heights to the simplicity of common language. This special calmness is delivered in the smooth movement of speech, which can be conveyed only through hexameter, where verses, devoid of unnatural, short, abrupt phrases, flow like waves into uninterrupted poetic periods.
