ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to highlight the characteristics of Australian children's fiction promoted by French translators in titles, covers and blurbs to market these books to readers in France. A systematic survey of solutions to the problems encountered by translators of Australian children's fiction is provided using examples from the most representative texts in the corpus. French translators who are keen to maintain the foreignness or 'otherness' of Australian fiction will attempt to convey as many exotic and unfamiliar elements of the new culture to readers in France while providing explanations and footnotes. The translation into French of referents of Australia and Australianness in the paratext necessitates a considerable variety of translational tendencies and interpretive choices. In blurbs, translators have focussed on the Australian landscape and have constructed an image that portrays Australia as primarily rural and specifically outback, a distant, wild, hot and unforgiving land with exotic flora and fauna.
