ABSTRACT

This chapter considers ways of delivering contextual information with Scripture products. Two basic solutions are possible: those that provide contextual adjustment outside the text, and those that provide contextual adjustment within the text. These criteria combine with the degree of resemblance to the original to give four basic kinds of products, as shown in Table 16: out-of-text contextual helps with a simplified text and with a full text, and in-text contextual helps with a simplified text and with a full text. First, I discuss out-of-text means of delivering contextual adjustment materials, supported with my field research data on the full text with footnotes (Mode 2). Then I discuss two forms of in-text solutions: an analysis of a Bible story, that is, a simplified text with in-text contextual helps, and the analysis of an amplified full text from my field data (Mode 3).1
