ABSTRACT

This prayer, which calls on Jewish and pagan gods for help, is attributed to a Jewish woman living around the time of Christ. It is not unique; there is a plethora of such prayers, offered by both Jewish and non-Jewish people. Although I have been familiar with the Bible my entire life, I’ve interpreted it through my Western cultural grid. I never expected prayers like this one to be on the lips of a Jewish woman in Jesus’ day. I was surprised to find that cultural context of Jesus’ day was much more similar to the Adioukrou world than to my own.
