ABSTRACT
Individuals must be the units of concern and justice, but they are misleading units of analysis and reform. The greater our concern with individuals, the greater must be our efforts to document carefully the social conditions in which they express themselves. We must look away from individuals in order to preserve them. (Varenne and McDermott 1998:45)
