ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the portrait of moral agency by situating Ms. Terry Kennedy a moral agent teacher, practices in these outer and inner worlds. Terry's approach to moral education is enabled and supported by her school context and is shaped and motivated by her personal ideology. Terry's voice sustains a strong presence as she recounts her own story and begins to share her innermost beliefs, assumptions, and perceptions. Yet, it should be remembered that Terry was a leader and active participant in creating this environment, generating commitment from the school community, motivating staff and teachers, acquiring and distributing resources and knowledge, facilitating a process to identify school values, and helping to create the Character Development, Peacemakers, and Community Outreach Programs. Lastly, the specific practices Terry employs are consistent with reports from other empirical work. These studies were conducted in a variety of school and classroom contexts, demonstrating that the practices themselves are robust and potentially transferable.
