ABSTRACT

This chapter explains three practices of Ms. Terry Kennedy who was a moral agent teacher. She related to expressing moral values in the teacher's personal and professional conduct, behaviours, and practices; nurturing a class community; and fostering caring relationships with students. The chapter is arranged in three sections, one for each practice. The first section identifies and illustrates many moral values expressed in Terry's conduct, behaviours, and practices. The second section describes Terry's efforts to nurture and sustain a morally infused class community. The final section recounts how Terry fosters caring relationships with each student and how these relationships provide a model for the relationships she hopes to foster among students. Terry focuses on moral values that underlie professional practice, classroom life, and structures of schooling. Finally, Terry is emotionally honest with students. This entails knowingly, and in some cases intentionally, expressing a range of emotions and allowing herself to be vulnerable in doing so.
