ABSTRACT

In order to be sustainable, a building designed for and built in the LDR context must respond to the critical issues of sustainability that apply there. While many issues are the same for both more developed and less developed countries, a building considered sustainable in the US or Europe, for example, could be missing the mark in the LDR context. It might depend on technologies that don't exist there or be predicated on an uninterrupted supply of water and electricity. And it may not even begin to address issues that are critical to sustainability in the LDRs.
