ABSTRACT
Taxes and duties are an important source of fi nance for public sector activities, but at the same time it is important to understand the impact of taxes and duties on issues such as incentives (especially work and savings) and equality. This chapter presents the principles and consequences of various ways of fi nancing public sector activities and the role of the welfare state.
