ABSTRACT

The relationship between state, market and civil society, the welfare mix, has been a central issue in the discussion about welfare states for a long time. Previous chapters have dealt with the market and the state, without including the role of civil society. The discussion about the welfare mix includes questions about who is responsible for what, who will take over if another person or institution fails to provide welfare, and how to balance individual freedom with societal intervention. Thus this chapter will begin by presenting the welfare mix, in

order to depict the boundaries between the three central institutional providers of welfare in welfare states.
