The Beibu Gulf Economic Zone (BGEZ) in Guangxi, China consists of six prefecture-level cities: Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou, Fangchenggang, Chongzhuo and Yulin. It is one of the most prosperous areas in Guangxi, accounting for around 45 per cent of the region's gross domestic product (GDP). The State Council of China approved the Development Plan for the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Area in 2008. The economic hinterland of the Beibu Gulf, mainly southwest China and the northern part of the Indochina Peninsula consists of economically underdeveloped areas where industrialization is still at an initial stage. The China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (CMQIP) which was approved by the Chinese authority and officially opened in 2012, is the third government-to-government project between Chinese and foreign governments, after the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park and China-Singapore Tianjin Eco City.
