ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses Guangdong's prospects, current progress and challenges in industrial upgrading, and the problems caused by government initiatives, and at the same time, examines the theoretical explanations offered by various literature. Guangdong, with its successful industrial take-off over the past three decades, needs to prove that it is still dynamic and resilient and that it still has the capability to adapt to changes. In view of its remarkable industrial development and economic take-off, Guangdong province was chosen as a case study for this chapter. The Guangdong government aimed to strengthen industrial competitiveness by focusing on the development of electronic information, electric appliances and petroleum and chemical industries. To achieve rapid economic growth and sustainable industrial development, Guangdong's industries should seek to transform their growth model from one that relied on extensive expansion to one that focuses on intensive growth, with emphasis on both quantitative and qualitative improvement.
