ABSTRACT

Thereisinsufficientspaceinthisvolumeto reprintinextensoallthecommentaries,ortorecapitulatethesixlivelyandoftenincisivediscussionswhichfollowedthecommentaries.Anumber oftheoreticalproblems,whicharoseinthecourse ofthedebates,havealreadybeendealtwithbyus intheIntroduction.We,therefore,restrictourselvestothreecentralthemes:thestandardof livingdebate,the(macro-)economicbasisofthe historicalinvestigationofconsumptionand,finally,anumberofsuggestionsforarevisedformulationofquestionsandpossiblefurtherresearchin ourfield.
