ABSTRACT

This chapter looks into three specific areas related to high expectations. When people focus on factors over which they have no control, their self-efficacy is lowered. Teachers with a high self-efficacy believe there are specific things they can do that will positively impact learning for struggling students. They have a stronger sense of control and, therefore, take actions that support that belief. There are two additional recommendations: Raising Expectations for Students, Clearly Communicate Expectations. people can make their expectations clear using two main tools: modeling and rubrics. Students need selected opportunities to read material that is at an appropriately challenging level. Graphic novels and technology-based materials are another useful option. It is important for students to read a book or an article they can quickly and easily finish; those opportunities build self-confidence, provide enjoyable experiences, increase fluency, and may increase student motivation.
