ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in this book. It first examines the human scale development (HSD) approach to study the relationship between consumption patterns and wellbeing among poor people in Peru. The chapter then proposes the study in Lleida (Catalonia) presented in to the example by Inez Aponte on the Transition Movement in the UK. The 'green economy' proponents, is an alternative to HSD which is closer to the perspectives of the degrowth and steady-state paradigms. The chapter talks about the enhancement of understanding the relationship between optimal satisfaction of human needs and environmental sustainability. To increase the visibility of already successful local initiatives, it seems relevant to engage in collaborative projects that map the grassroots organisations, sustainable communities and individual strategies, that have succeeded in increasing human wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
