ABSTRACT

The problem-solving approach has been applied to a large range of issues in coaching, training and clinical settings. This chapter provides an example of such an approach, illustrating the successful application of the problem-solving processes outlined in Stephen Palmer's PRACTICE framework to a real-life school-based organizational problem. The chapter presents a case study, which outlines the PRACTICE framework that can be applied to support individuals or teams with problem-solving and solution-finding. The case highlights the value that coaching psychology principles and approaches can have when applied to organizational or systemic problems, and indicates the potential applicability of the PRACTICE framework in other such situations. In this particular case, a mainstream primary school found itself facing a crisis as to how it would provide for a number of children with significant Special Educational Needs (SEN) that would be transferring to the school's early years provision as part of their new intake.
