ABSTRACT

Resilience can be commonly conceived as 'bouncing back' from adversity; however, as noted by Michael Neenan, this conjures an image of a child's inflatable punch bag, being knocked down by force but then quickly reverting to an upright position. This chapter demonstrates how the principles of cognitive-behavioural coaching can be applied to support the members of an organization to develop resilience-enhancing strategies, leaving them better equipped to respond to current and future adversities at work and at home. It illustrates the following tools and techniques: the ABCDE model for recognizing, disputing and transforming self-limiting thoughts; identifying resilience-undermining thoughts (RUTs); disputing RUTs; developing resilience-enhancing thoughts (RETs); the SPACE model for developing insight into reactions to a situation and generating a multimodal intervention plan. The chapter re-emphasizes the value of enabling others by equipping them with tools to effectively coach themselves.
