ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out a non-judgemental, non-evaluative approach to teacher observation that engages the practitioner in actively reflecting on their practice and collaboratively reviewing the impact of their teaching strategies on pupil learning and engagement. An inherent feature of the approach described in the chapter is that resistance is less likely to occur in the conversation, simply due to the way in which the engagement is conducted. The chapter illustrates how the principles of the person-centred approach can be applied in coaching to support the creation of a non-judgemental climate in which the practitioner feels safe to openly and honestly reflect on the reality of their practice. The coaching engagement demonstrates the value of adopting a non-judgemental approach, thereby creating a climate of acceptance in which the person feels safe enough to express themselves openly and explore the possibility of change.
