ABSTRACT

Holocaust denial and distortion are extreme forms of antisemitism. They are typically motivated by hatred of Jews and seek to perpetuate the historic anti-Jewish stereotypes of a global conspiracy and ambitions of worldwide domination. Nevertheless, the prevalence and rise of Holocaust denial and distortion have merited the subject a chapter in its own right, independent of – but connected to – the remarks in the previous chapter on combating antisemitism. It seems that for many teachers – especially those with less experience of teaching the subject – facing Holocaust deniers and distorters in the classroom, as well as countering their arguments convincingly and effectively, is one of the most serious concerns that they hold. This chapter aims to give a clear and up-to-date picture of the current scene and provide practitioners with the arsenal they need to challenge this antisemitic agenda robustly and vigorously.
