ABSTRACT

A key purpose of the disability data collection tools is to understand how schools can support their disabled children and remove barriers to participation. This chapter presents a report on what parents wrote about the experience of their child. Looking across all phases of schooling, parents were most likely to mention aspects concerned with the organization for learning, namely individual support or the presence of a teaching assistant or rather less frequently being in a small group. Just under one in five parents wrote about the importance of staff attitudes towards their child. In addition to the attitudes of staff, unsurprisingly parents also valued specialist advice. Parents also mentioned speech therapy as support from the past: Only needed speech therapy when young, discharged, and the support were good. The most common diagnosis that children received was that of autistic spectrum disorder, and the data were analyzed to investigate whether, there were issues that were specific to this group.
