ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the Key Problems of Sociological Theory that may serve to stimulate colleagues to resume the enterprise of typological analysis, Which Max Weber began, rather than seeking an American future in purely empiricist, positivist or functionalist studies. The form of empiricism with which Max Weber was preoccupied at the time of writing was that which dominated British sociology. It might best be described as the 'social book-keeping' approach. Many sociologists have claimed that they are operationalizing sociological variables and testing them in a scientific and quantitative way. In fact the barbarization of social research can only be prevented if some sociologists are willing to work speculatively and inexactly beyond the bounds of exact quantification. The awareness of the entanglement of sociological and political issues has been intensified in recent arguments about the so-called 'student revolt'.
