ABSTRACT

The professionalization of the sociologist's role proceeds apace, and this, for many sociologists, is a matter for rejoicing and self-congratulation. Sociology is a late-comer in the Association. Its very arrival there is a part of the process of its institutionalization, and the section meetings are likely to be attended especially by those sociologists who see the institutionalized destiny of the subject as being a scientific one. Western sociologists have noted that Marxism as a political ideology of a ruling class or a revolutionary class seeks to justify itself as being scientific. The first thing to be said about the vocation of sociology as it first appeared historically is that, for all its claims to be the new science of politics or of society. Most of the truly creative thinking in sociology has in fact been concerned with the development of ideal types of social structure.
