ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some difficult aspects of the drive system and how people can deal with this in compassionate ways. It explores the competition mode and the threat mode, which are particular forms of the doing mode, and introduce the compassion mode, a special form of the being mode. The chapter presents the three basic mental patterns such as threat mode, competition mode, caring mode connected to emotion regulation systems. It also talks about a special compassion mode exercise, although in fact all exercises and practices in this course are aimed at training us in the compassion mode, including the exercises that help us become aware of inner patterns, resistance and desires. The chapter discusses the 'inner bully' and self-conscious emotions like shame, shyness and guilt. It investigates which inner patterns dominate us most and how one can recognize, name and compassionately deal with them.
