ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three values that people consider guidelines in the search for the relief of suffering and that can contribute to more wisdom and compassion in medicine and psychology. The first is concerned with what-the content of what people do to alleviate suffering and the methods that are applied. The second and third are concerned with how-the way in which people deal with each other and with themselves. 'Put everything to the test and keep what is good' gives guidance on how we deal with the world in the broadest sense in our search for effective remedies. 'Treat others as you want to be treated yourself' gives guidance on how we deal with each other, acknowledging that we all want to be happy and free from suffering. 'There is more right than wrong with us' gives guidance on how we deal with ourselves, giving space to the possibilities of awakening and healing qualities that are present in us.
