ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at different aspects of male violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence and men's violation of each other. It also looks at one of the most extraordinary and outrageous instances of male violence namely, US school shootings in an effort to understand how the different factors work together. The strange alliance of radical feminists, ethologists and evolutionary psychologists have argued that violence is hardwired into men's very being: that they cannot help but wreak misery and suffering upon the world. Fingers have been pointed towards various sites of the male body as the main source of the problem: the 'warrior' gene, the 'dimorphic' brain and, of course, the male sex hormone, testosterone. The theorists believe that violence is, in essence, a masculine mode of engagement with the world. Assessing the full extent of male violence is a fraught business.
