ABSTRACT
This chapter looks some aspects of the relationships between staffs and alterity and presents barriers to the 'natural', unfacilitated development of such a global self among the students. It looks more specifically at the social implications of aspects of globalization. The chapter focuses on the global self through an examination of communication and other competencies which help shape the flow amongst alterity, and through considerations of what general conditions support the development of the global student. It looks into some of the consequences of globalization as theorized to impact upon individual identity and agency, and upon the capabilities of the students to make their way in the world. The chapter illustrates a number of ways in which the postmodern, globalizing world is argued to challenge individuals' capacities to establish and maintain self-identity. It discusses how the students experience their intercultural encounters positively and take that learning forward as a capability to support their selves-in-the-world.
