ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the seven major 'e' activities by individuals, are: home-based work; shopping online; e-banking; e-learning; e-government; travel online and e-health. The special nature of the relationships between physical and virtual spaces for daily activities is highlighted, pointing to complementarity between the two action spaces rather than to substitution of the real by the virtual. The contemporary scene of the information age presents to individuals a wide choice among media for a variety of performances via virtual action space, including mainly Personal Computers (PCs), laptops, tablets and smartphones. The introduction and wide adoption of mobile broadband implies instant access to cyberspace for its users, but it may further carry implications for the use and meaning of urban physical space for smartphone users. Home-based work has probably been the first and continuously discussed action space and potential locational opportunity for individuals equipped with the needed ICT devices. Such possible changes would, favor of the virtual at the expense of real.
