ABSTRACT
This chapter provides good examples of how events commodify public space. It aims to highlight the complex, subtle and controversial legacies of events staged in public spaces. The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a very diverse and highly polarised socio-economic urban area. Legacy is a key theme in much of the event policy work and academic research published in recent years. Woolwich Common was also a key venue, although the events here received far less publicity. Other legacies of staging the 2012 Games for Woolwich include the changes made to General Gordon Square, the town's main plaza. The Chapter finishes with a detailed discussion of a new event and a new events policy for Blackheath an open space which is partly in the Borough of Greenwich, but which mostly lies in neighbouring Lewisham. Blackheath is officially 'manorial waste' that has been controlled by local government bodies for almost 150 years.
