ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the current study was carried out and the research approach that was adopted, as well as offering a discussion of the work of the Psychosocial Working Group (PWG) and how this was adapted for use in the current study. The qualitative research is now recognised as making a distinctive and important contribution to research and to disciplines such as health care, education and psychology. The chapter examines the multi-layered effects and forms of support received by victims of the 2002 Bali bombings in Indonesia and Australia. The psychosocial approach to disaster mitigation is considered one of the most appropriate methods to assist populations affected by conflict and has been utilised many times after disasters such as 9/11 and the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. The PWG defined the psychosocial social aspects of well-being into three core domains, namely human capacity, social ecology and culture and values.
