ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the main stages within a typical lesson before moving on to consider a range of common types of activities, drawn from numerous subject areas and phases of education. It shows how key elements such as student curiosity and motivation can be fostered through the design of these teaching activities. The opening of the lesson, the starter, is probably the most important and crucial part of the lesson to get right. As the lesson continues, ensure that you refer back to the learning contained within the starter in your comments to the class. The word 'plenary' comes from the Latin word plenarius, meaning 'full' or 'full-ness'. It completes the lesson and provides a meaningful sense of closure for the students and teacher alike. Following the starter, the next building block of the three-part lesson is the main teaching activity. The teaching and learning activities should be: Purposeful, Dynamic, Differentiated, Time limited and sequenced.
