ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how varying types of assessment can impact on the teaching and learning that you are going to undertake. Assessment, teaching and reflection are integrated processes that usefully inform each other and, when conceptualised as such, result in a unified model of teaching in which teachers and students can work together for common ends. Involving students in the review and evaluation of the assessment process will generally have a positive impact on their perception of what assessment is for. The role of a 'mastery experience' is the most important factor in developing a student's self-efficacy. The assessment of students' work can be done in a caring, sympathetic and empathetic way. Assessment processes are characterised in different ways and use different labels. Assessment is a key part of your pedagogy. Some of the most common include summative assessment, formative assessment, ipsative assessment and other generic terms such as assessment for learning (AfL).
