ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a range of approaches to the documentation and planning of learning. It discusses how the individual lesson plan itself relates to broader processes of medium- and longer-term curriculum planning and the differences in planning approaches that people can expect to find in primary and secondary schools. Long- and medium-term planning is vitally important. The chapter suggests a two-staged process for people to consider as they start their work. The first stage involves the construction of a 'curriculum overview map'; the second stage will introduce a 'unit of work map'. A curriculum overview map provides people with an opportunity to sketch out a long-term plan for a particular key stage. The curriculum overview map is not the time or place for extended expositions of, people chosen topics and other responses. The unit of work map relates directly to the curriculum overview map. The actual unit of work document flows from the kind of brainstorming activity.
