A. Kent Hieatt The prim ary reason that the Latinate words "em pire,"
"pow er," "force," and "closure" are the ones which I must use for corresponding concepts below is that the Romans established by physical violence a political and cultural control over the lands from which these words of my language come. In an attenuated sense I am a victim (and a beneficiary) of political and cultural im perialism . A mass of signals from language and cultural artifacts in English-speaking regions bears w itness to this arbitrary early act.
