ABSTRACT

The artistic w orks listed in this appendix have been gathered from a number of scattered sources, there being to date no iconography of Arthurian-inspired works of art. The list is by way of a prolegomenon, and no claim is made for its completeness; however, the number of items identified gives a clear indication of the imaginative appeal the subject had for Victorian artists. Many of the works cited have not been located in modern collections, but for each, full, if not always complete or totally consistent, documentation is provided. One of the most interesting discoveries made in preparing the catalogue is how widespread was the use of Arthurian narrative in the applied arts. Besides paintings, watercolors, and drawings based on literary sourcesoften M alory but more frequently Tennyson's Id y lls-b o o k illustrations, tapestries, murals, embroideries, illuminations, and even stage sets and costumes drew heavily on Arthurian subjects. No designs for tiles were uncovered, but an A rthurian tile surround by Morris & Co. can easily be imagined. The number and variety of works taken directly from Tennyson suggest that his prominence in the Arthurian revival of the nineteenth century had a far greater influence on the art of that period than previous commentators realized.
