ABSTRACT

As music education moves away from saying that classical music from Western Europe exemplifies the best that music has to offer, more and more teachers of music are also challenging the notions that there are correct ways of interpreting music and best ways of producing music. Students had just read about various approaches to multicultural education, and Kevin Kumashiro was interested in exploring multiple multicultural approaches to teaching music. As a social studies teacher in Southern California, his tenth grade World History class and he investigates the intersection of the past, present, and future of Mexico by examining and creating various art forms. Like many other college choirs, his choir sang many classical pieces, that is, songs from the Western European Christian tradition of music. Elements of traditional Hawaiian culture, including the themes of more and more songs and dances, began centering on Christianity, and today Christianity continues to impact Hawai'i in ways that change the cultures of Native Hawaiians.
