ABSTRACT

When Kevin Kumashiro, first Started Working in teacher education programs, he was struck by the large number of student teachers whose understanding of oppression consisted solely of interpersonal interactions that were visibly harmful. Challenging oppression must also involve addressing the many ways that everyone unintentionally teach; it requires illuminating and raising questions about the messages that are communicated by virtue of the very ways they operate schools. Classmates giggled, and the teacher proceeded to turn the class's attention to the toy brought by another student. As an incentive, the teacher explained that, after they completed the assignment, she would take them on a trip to the amusement park, paid for by the school district. The students cheered, expressing some disbelief, and they began analyzing the poem. One clip featured an elementary classroom during a show and tell activity. The second video clip featured a high school English classroom during a short lesson on grammar.
