ABSTRACT

We arrived in Chicago in early January 1913, ten years after my entry into advertising. All this while, except for the ten months I had spent on the World staff, I had faced a weekly payroll. As a respite, I rather fancied the relish and relief of being on the receiving end. I had been in Chicago but once or twice before and had but one friend and a speaking acquaintance in the Windy City. Bryan was the one and Mr. Paul Faust of the L&T agency the other. Bryan was now doing newspaper promotional work at fancy fees, and Mr. Victor Lawson of The Chicago Daily News and Mr. Hearst were two of his principal clients.
