ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains some of the aspects of Forest School that are essential to provide a successful experience for the children in one's care; from the origins of Forest School and its introduction into United Kingdom settings, to implementation in one's own early years setting. Jean Piaget who works with young children's made some profound and controversial statements describing how children learn. The city of Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy is home to one of the most recent styles of learning that influences modern early year's education and from where some of Forest School's underlying principles come. Margaret McMillan was one of the UK's first pioneers in nursery education. Her nursery came from a desire to provide a better start for some of London's poorest children. Friedrich Froebel an educationalist in Germany, wanted young children to have nursery gardens to play and learn in.
