ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how children can create their own play, bringing together their own understandings and exploring them in an imaginative and more refined way. It looks at how the learning styles and individual children's interests used and planned for indoors, can be used to strengthen the learning outdoors. There is a look at the characteristics of effective learning, featured in the revised Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS), and a brief overview of planning for the children's needs. Bridgwater College in Somerset first reintroduced the idea of outdoor learning to early year's providers in the United Kingdom (UK). Initially the College's Forest School practice was within their own early year's centre of excellence. Later, through the introduction of Sure Start and using money allocated to the Bridgwater Education Action Zone, the Forest School approach began to be delivered to local nurseries, pre-schools and reception classes.
