ABSTRACT

This chapter explains some of the well-known and proven benefits of including Forest School in early year's settings. With the knowledge that introducing a new style of play is so positive, many settings have felt driven to persevere against adversity in order to embed Forest School into their regular opportunities. There is detail about how Forest School helps to improve self-esteem, independence and confidence. Confidence in young children is affected by the attitude of the people around them and experienced staff should be able to generate positivity in all aspects of a child's play, without the need to plan or discuss how such a process can be undertaken. Forest School gives children an additional environment in which they can make changes to their own attitude without the realization that this is actually happening. Forest School, whilst usually frequented by the same children over the series of regular visits, often throws children into different friendship groups.
