ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how planning can be adapted to include experiences for Forest School learning, alongside the existing indoor and outdoor play experiences. One of the most appealing aspects of providing learning experiences in the style of Forest School is the ability to tailor them to many different areas of the curriculum. Regardless of the specific curriculum, there is always an objective that will fit the activity, or a child-led initiative that fits within the curriculum. It is hard to make direct comparisons, but Forest School provides a less structured experience in a unique location. With the emphasis on building self-esteem and confidence, Forest School learning makes time and allowance for individuals, which in a busy setting, despite their best efforts, does not always happen. It provides children with a wider outlook on life, helps them to make sense of their own locality and brings them into direct contact with the elements.
