ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to the terrestrial radio telex and data services in the MF and HF marine bands. To ensure that an operator has been connected to the correct coast radio station, ship station, or telex subscriber ashore, it is normal to exchange answerbacks at the commencement and termination of a telex link. Radio circuits are liable to interference, fading, or bursts of static, which can mutilate sections of a telex message. Radio data transmission services are offered in the HF bands by a number of stations operating jointly in order to send and receive email communications on a global basis. For communication between a ship and a shore station, the automatic repeat request/query mode should be used on a fully automated or semi-automated basis when available. The operator of the ship station establishes communication by telephony, or by other means, using normal calling procedures.
