ABSTRACT

The nervous system is the mechanism by which the indi vidual’s behaviour is controlled and regulated. When he sees, learns, thinks, or desires, he is using his nervous system, as well as his receptors and muscles. There is much detailed knowledge of the structure and function of the nervous system. For a century and more many physiologists, ana tomists, and clinicians have studied it, hoping to throw light on behaviour. Much of this knowledge is remote from our ordinary range of ideas. In psychology we are primarily concerned with those factors influencing behaviour which can be manipulated and modified, and there is little that the student can do in the way of manipulating his nervous system directly. But a few basic facts are helpful in getting below the surface of human behaviour (j o ).
