ABSTRACT
All through the preceding chapters the individual has been represented as ‘dealing with the environment’ or being in ‘active give-and-take relations with the environment*. He receives stimuli which he uses as signs of objects present in the environment and of events going on there; and he responds by moving around in the environment, manipulat ing objects and taking part in what is going on. He learns to know and manage the environment.
